Kindred Class Styles

Yoga

  • These sessions will include pranically-oriented movement (asana), pranayama and meditation.

From the perspective of yoga, as taught by Patanjali, the human body is considered to be an 'island of excellence'. What keeps us from experiencing life, our mind and energy through this lens, is an over-identification with the outer aspects of it, and too little focus on what's happening underneath.

These classes use asana (postures) and breath to explore & shape the movement of Prana (energy) through the system, to create the ideal environment for meditation (yoga) to arise.

Although suitable for all & modifications will be provided, previous yoga experience is a benefit.

  • All levels

  • The word “Anusara” (pronounced “AH-noo-SAH-rah”) is a Sanskrit term that means “flowing with grace.” It is also sometimes interpreted as “listening to your heart,” “going with the flow,” or “following your bliss.” Because of its focus on positive thinking, Anusara yoga classes are often uplifting and inspirational.

Anusara yoga provides a highly effective way to align the body with what is called “the optimal blueprint.” This blueprint is an energetic imprint of the physical body and represents the most ideal alignment of the body where all parts are integrated, open and functioning in the most optimal way. There is a specific sequence of steps in which the body becomes aligned to this blueprint, which is referred to as the Universal Principles of Alignment™. As the word Universal suggests, these principles apply to all people, of all ages, abilities and stages in life. The Universal Principles of Alignment are highly therapeutic and provide a basis of knowledge and approach for Yoga Therapy.

The philosophy that underpins Anusara yoga classes is referred to as a non-dual philosophy. This philosophy takes the premise that life is not a punishment, not a problem to overcome, but that life is essentially good. In our lives, we have the potential of experiencing happiness in the highest way, when we align ourselves, both physically, mentally and spiritually.

Come join us for an energising yoga practice to start your day.

In this class, we won't be delving into the complete Ashtanga primary series, but rather, we'll be exploring different postures from it, all taught in the authentic Ashtanga style.

This approach involves holding each posture for a duration of 5 breaths, which is different to the more dynamic Vinyasa classes. This longer hold provides a range of benefits, including an increase in flexibility and strength.

Furthermore, this practice allows us to gain a deeper understanding of each posture by concentrating on our alignment during these extended holds.

It is suitable for beginners, and also those who have done Pilates before but want to work on specific areas of weakness, who are recovering from injury or maintaining an injury-free status.

Qigong

  • Qigong – Bringing your Breath, Mind & Body into Awareness

Qigong (pronounced ‘chee-gong’) is an ancient Chinese art coordinating breathing techniques with graceful movement. Usually practiced as sequenced sets, these simple Health Qigong movements help the body realign itself naturally on all levels. Focusing on both the internal workings of the body (internal organs, bones, tendons, energy channels) as well as the external (muscles, skin and sense organs), the practices are low-impact and suitable for all fitness levels and all ages.

Typically practiced in a standing position, Health Qigong sets can equally be exercised from a seated position and have been linked to:

    - Increased Flexibility, Mobility and Co-ordination

    - The Promotion of Radiant Health, Longevity and Healthy Digestion

    - An Improvement in Balance, Concentration and Well-Being

    - A Reduction in Worry, Stress, Strain

  • Liù Zì Jué – Six Healing Sounds

The Six Healing Sounds or Liù Zì Jué involves the coordination of movement and breathing patterns with specific sounds and is based on the Taoist principle that there is only one way for inhalation but six for exhalation.

In traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the major organs of the body each have an associated sound which the organ resonates with.  The Six Healing Sound practice uses this sound in a purposeful way to create internal vibration, thereby expelling stale and congested energy from each of the individual organs.

Suitable for beginners or those with some knowledge of Qigong.

  • Medicine Song & Cacao Ceremony with Helen Cantrell

Helen has run sacred song circles for over 6 years in Sligo and in 2021 undertook two Cacao Mastery courses. She has run many sacred song and cacao circles since and finds Cacao's beautiful rich heart warming medicine a nourishment for the soul!

Helen shares her passion for music, sacred songs and sounds and her love for Cacao through these gatherings of community in circle that always help lift the heart, reconnect us to our own authentic voice and bring happiness, joy and peace.

More details on Sacred Song & Cacao Circles with Helen:

We will begin the evening with opening prayers and then drink our Cacao setting our intent for the ceremony. We will then sing sacred songs from across the globe to help us journey into our hearts and hear guidance from Mama cacao.

    Cacao Dose:

I will be making the cacao (25g each) with water and will have it in a flask ready to drink upon the opening of the ceremony. If you do want to make it lighter for you please let me know as soon as you can and I can make it for you in a separate flask. This will be 16g.

As Cacao is quite bitter I will bring some honey to add to it.

    Safety and Contra Indications:

Generally, cacao is safe to drink.

Some people may develop a headache or nausea, in part because cacao can be dehydrating. I find by drinking some water before and after taking cacao helps with this.

    Contra- Indications:

There are only a few contra indications for Cacao but because it has several mood enhancing properties I would ask those that are taking anti-depressants or have a serious heart condition to consider not attending. If you have any questions with regards to this please get in touch.

** Any questions on any of the above or anything at all get in touch: helencantrelltherapy@gmail.com
